As a Director of Twyford Consulting I bring specialist expertise in designing, delivering and evaluating community engagement processes. As well as an experienced consultant, I am also a Master Trainer for the IAP2, having delivered certificate training for five years. With my colleagues, I developed and delivered courses in facilitation and evaluation related to this field. I also co-delivered the first IAP2 Training Academy in Alberta, Canada (January 2005).
Since joining Twyford Consulting in 1997, I have helped to establish the Australasian Chapter of the International Association for Public Participation. With a particular interest in participatory democracy, I have developed innovative models for community engagement covering a range of projects, including those with a social planning emphasis as well as infrastructure/environmental projects, and have presented papers on these models at National and International Conferences, including in Banff, Canada in 1999, Salt Lake City in 2002, Madison 2004, Portland, Oregon in 2005 and Montreal 2006. I am also a regular guest lecturer at the University of Sydney.
In 2005 I played a major role in the preparation of the ‘Brisbane Declaration on Engaging Communities’ which was presented to the United Nations. In 2007 along with my colleagues, I co-wrote and published my first book titled “Beyond Public Meetings: Connecting Community Engagement with Decision-Making”. 2007 was a big year because in November 2007 along with the ACT Disability Advisory Council, I was awarded the IAP2 Award for ‘Project of the Year’ for the design and implementation of the Challenge 2014 Project.
